Hangu is a city as well as a district located in the Kohat Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. The district covers a total area of about 1,097 square kilometers and features a diverse landscape comprising fertile agricultural plains, open valleys, and low mountain ranges. The name Hangu is often associated with the Miranzai Valley, significant portions of which lie within the district and extend towards the historic Samana Range, forming natural boundaries with neighboring areas. The district has a predominantly rural population, with agriculture and livestock rearing forming the backbone of the local economy.
Administratively, Hangu holds strategic importance due to its proximity to Kohat, Kurram, and Orakzai regions. According to the 2023 delimitation, the district has been allocated one seat in the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one seat in the National Assembly, designated as Hangu-cum-Orakzai, ensuring its representation in legislative affairs at both provincial and national levels.
Tehsils of Hangu District
It has following two Tehsils:
- Tehsil Hangu. Its area is 669 Sq. Km, while population according to 2023 census is 280,883.
- Tehsil Thall. Its area is 428 Sq. Km, while population according to 2023 census is 248,019.
District Population
According to the 2023 population census, Hangu District has a total population of 528,902 people. Of this number, 260,293 are males, while 268,601 are females, indicating a slightly higher female population in the district. When compared with the 2017 census, which recorded a population of 518,811, the district has experienced a modest increase in population over the intervening years.
This gradual growth reflects natural population increase and improved living conditions. Despite this rise, Hangu continues to maintain its predominantly rural character, with most residents living in villages and relying on agriculture, trade, and allied activities for their livelihood.
Rural Localities / Villages in Hangu District
There are a total of 51 rural localities or villages in Hangu District, highlighting its largely rural settlement pattern. As per the 2017 census data, 24 of these towns and villages have a population of 5,000 or more, making them relatively larger population centers within the district. In addition, nine villages fall in the population range of 2,000 to 4,999 residents, while eight localities have populations between 1,000 and 1,999.
Furthermore, eight villages record populations ranging from 500 to 999 inhabitants, reflecting the presence of several small and sparsely populated settlements.
