Mansehra city and district form an important part of the Hazara Division in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, blending rich history, diverse culture, and striking mountain landscapes. The city of Mansehra serves as the administrative headquarters of Mansehra District and is one of the larger urban centres in the region. According to the 2017 census, Mansehra city had a population of about 127,623, making it among the more populous cities of the province.
Mansehra District was formally established as a separate administrative district in 1976. Before that, it formed part of the larger Hazara region. Over time, administrative changes led to the creation of new districts from its territory, including Battagram in 1993 and Torghar in 2011. The district covers an area of about 4,579 square kilometres and remains largely rural in nature, with the majority of the population living in villages.
Population of Mansehra
According to the 2023 census, Mansehra District has a population of around 1.79 million. The population is ethnically diverse, including Hindko-speaking communities, Pashtuns, Gujjars, Swatis, and others. Literacy levels in the district show improvement over time, though a noticeable gap remains between male and female literacy. Administratively, the district is divided into several tehsils such as Mansehra, Balakot, Oghi, Baffa Pakhal, Darband, and Tanawal.
